DID YOU KNOW | Once upon a time...
Monday, July 14
Once upon a time there was a girl who loved hand-lettering and doodling.
She used to win awards in elementary school for "best handwriting"
and she'll never forget that her 5th grade teacher chose HER to fill an entire chalkboard with assignments and practice sentences for the rest of the class because she was "such a good speller and had fantastic penmanship."
She has spent much of her life obsessing over the perfect pen and frequenting stationery stores to swoon over the selections of beautiful paper, pens and inks available.
She has doodled on any type of paper medium within reach during phone conversations and long waits; scrap paper, tissue paper, paper towels and even toilet tissue.
When she was a cheerleader she LOVED making the posters for game nights and her favorite part of Science Projects was creating the visual aspect of the experiment using a poster board.
She'll always remember overhearing her grandfather mention to her mother how talented and gifted she was after he saw one of the school project posters she was free-handing.
As a teen standing as a cashier in a grocery store, you could find her doodling and writing poems on the back of old receipts in between customers and when business was slow.
She even taught herself a little bit of calligraphy and a few years later, as a young adult, the president of the company she was working for at the time asked her to address, (in calligraphy), his personal Christmas Cards that season.
She has always loved lettering…even picking her children's names based on the way they looked when hand-written.
When she started her blog she picked the name based on what she loved most: Pen + Paper
and then tacked on "Flowers" to represent her 3 girls = Pen N' Paper Flowers
She has always been a deep-thinking, poem-writing, quote-hoarding, doodle-design making girl.
Her doodles are simple.
Her quotes are simple (most of the time) Ha!!
and the combination of the two leads to some simply fun design/art/stuff.
I hope you'll follow along as that girl continues to add art to her NEW Society6 Shoppe as well as to her Etsy Shoppe.

I have a notebook full of poems and another notebook filled with doodles and hand-lettering I've collected through the years.
I'm hoping to share the doodles with you soon.
As for the poems…I think I'll keep those tucked away…they're pretty embarrassing since most of them were from middle school and high school.

Celebrate with me!!
You know I love creating art prints.
And you know I love sharing art prints here on the blog.
I also share daily original art prints on my Instagram account every. week. day.
Well…thanks to the many requests and encouragement from fans, friends and readers, I'm so excited to now have my art prints available in the form of...
Monday, May 24
a couple of months ago, i was approached by a customer who wanted a custom invitation.
it was for a 1st birthday invitation for her daugher named scout...(so cute).
she wanted it to match a birthday bib she purchased.
the bib came from a shoppe on etsy called modern frills...
personalized tees...
monogrammed totes...
and they even do custom designs!!
here's a picture of the birthday cake design i was asked to match...
cute...right?
so here's the cake design we came up with for her invitation...
(if you're a fan on my facebook fan page then you've seen this before)...
didn't it?
well...
before you get all excited about me making this available in my shoppe...
i've got some BAD news...
this particular cake design will NOT be available for purchase.
why?
because it's a design that really belongs to modern frills...
and i REALLY try to give credit where credit is due and follow all of the unspoken AND spoken graphic design rules...
it's seriously a BIG deal to us graphic designers...
the GOOD news?
unbeknownst to me...
my dear friend kim from the tomkat studio and modern frills had/have been working together for some time now to create matching invites for the adorable items over at modern frills.
is that a crazy coincidence? (not really...i'll explain in a minute).
so if you're looking for matching invites...
they WILL be available at some point!
and i can't wait to see their sure-to-be adorable invites when they are completed.
i'll be sure to let you know when they become available because after all...
who DOESN'T want matching invites and birthday outfits for their special event!?
so here's how the "coincidence" happened...
with kim crazy-busy...
(and who wouldn't be with 4,800+ fans on her facebook fan page)??? *wink*
she referred one of her customers to me who was requesting a "custom b/day cake logo".
i worked up the design and shared with kim the final proof...
(after all, it was a design come-to-life due to a referral she'd sent me).
as you might have guessed...both kim and i were totally surprised when she immediately recognized the design to be something similar to the modern frills collection. crazy!
so...
adjustments were in order.
i was in LOVE with the cake design but needed to make it my own.
after all...what's the use of designing things i can't offer to you in my shoppe! *wink*
well...
i got out my digital flour, sugar & eggs...
i heated up the graphic arts oven...
did a little recipe tweaking...
and voila...
a collection of some cakes i baked up over the weekend...
after some tweaking & redesigning the shape & tiers of the original cake...
i've now got something i CAN offer in my shoppe...
just.
for.
you...
cake anyone?
*wink*
what do you think?
and the fact that you can "custom order" the cake in any color scheme???
now THAT'S a WONDERFUL bonus. *double wink*
hey...
here's an idea...
for a "sweet sixteen" birthday...
you could always add one of these to the top...
cute?
i definitely think so.
let me know what your favorite color scheme is.
(either out of the ones pictured or one you'd like to see added)...
hope you all had a nice weekend.
i was able to finish painting three more walls in the dining/kitchen.
i've still got one main wall to finish in the dining...
and then it's time to move into the kitchen, hall, pantry and 1/2 bath.
and did i tell you i want to repaint the foyer?
yep.
i think it needs to be darker.
the entire house is being transformed by "antique white"...
not necessarily what i had planned...
it's just kind of turning out that way.
i've got a color called "sisal" that may end up being the replacement in the foyer...
i need to share pictures...don't i?!
but it's progress.
and that's exactly what i needed this weekend!
hugs to everyone...
here's to a progress-filled week for us all!
Keeping It Real
Ella developed a fever yesterday so we're back to battling sickness around here.
"C'mon man..."!!
Keeping my head up though. This is STILL going to be a GREAT week.
(even if I have to "pretend" my way through it....*wink*)

i thought this bug themed birthday invite turned out super adorable!
i'm getting ready to put it in my etsy shoppe as soon as i've finalized things with the client who requested it.
(and there will be matching party accessories...of course)! *wink*
and then here's another design request...
(an owl-themed baby shower)
don't you just love that color combination?! it's perfect for either a boy OR a girl!
this too will be available soon in the shoppe.
i've got to work on getting some moving cards done too...
i'm tempted to just use THIS design i shared with you awhile back:
it'd save me from having to create something new...
but it's so "out-of-character" for me to NOT do something new.
i mean, afterall,
this IS a moving card for OUR actual move...
BUT...
i could always use this design too...
this is another proof i did for the same client...
hmmm...
decision...decisions...
on a different note, the majority of the weekend was spent over at the old house...again.
there's still things to get out of the attic and some loose ends to tie up.
i can't wait to be completely done over there.
(and do i dare mention the garage sale we'll be having at the old house???)
am i nuts?
like i don't have enough things to do?! *wink*
friday night was GREAT though.
we attended the first annual talent show at the elementary school...
ema was debuting her drum talents.
she did great!
she was so confident too.
i love her.
okay...i'm starting the week off right by jumping back into my routine of blogging...
i'll do some walking/jogging later...
and i'll be getting some design work done too.
i've GOT to do something about my eating.
it's been completely out of control because we've been so out of our routine around here.
today is a new day...a new week...
and i'm ready to make a new start. (despite having eaten 1/2 a snickers bar i found in the fridge this morning)...*shhhh*
let's make it a great week people!
Keeping It Real
I seemed REALLY grumpy this weekend.
I also felt like a mom who doesn't know how to have fun & is too serious all of the time.
I don't like feeling that way.
but J reeled me back in and we had a "sit down".
He sure knows how to put things in perspective for me.
He keeps me grounded. I tend to be irrational at times. (a lot of times). *wink*
Tuesday, March 9
remember THIS?
want to see it in "PRINT"?
here you go...
how about with a "canvas" finish to it? (my FAVORITE finish right now)...
ahhhhhh!!!!
i LOVE getting them back from the printer...
they are even more adorable "in print"...
and the "mini" size makes me love them even more. (these are only 3.5x5 inches)
super adorable....
the matboard they are mounted on makes them super sturdy and...
they are cute enough to tuck into that birthday card you are about to mail out!
wouldn't your bff just LOVE to get one of these???
these are NOW AVAILABLE in my etsy shoppe...
boy do i need a "create balance" reminder right about now...
(the packing process is moving along slowly...but surely)...
the official closing date for the new house is march 25th!
wow!
hope you all are having a fantastic tuesday...

isn't finding the balance between life's many distractions & responsibilites just REALLY hard?
personally, i think it's especially hard for us women.
i know for me, i'm constantly making adjustments...trying to find the balance.
and honestly?
"achieving" balance is not the difficulty.
"maintaining" it is what seems to be near impossible.
but i think there ARE moments...
fleeting as they may be...
moments of perfect balance.
when things seem to all come together.
much of the time we've got to CREATE this balance though...
it doesn't just happen all on its own.
and that's the inspiration behind this new print i've been working on...
what do you think?
i teetered back and forth between using "create it", "find it" or "in search of"...
there was just something about "create it" that just struck a chord with me...
so i went with it.
i'll be offering this print in my etsy shop as an 11x14 print OR....
maybe even as a digital print???
if you NEED it....
like RIGHT NOW...
leave me a comment on my new facebook fanpage...
the first person to leave me a comment there will receive a 5x7 of this print FREE!
hurry!
go!
now!
(UPDATED...Congratulations Alison Bosen...you're the winner of the free 5x7)!!
see....
it pays to read the entire post! *wink*
Keeping It Real
i originally posted the print with a green background...(which will still be available).
BUT in keeping with the Valentine holiday approaching...i HAD to turn it pink! *wink*
Thursday, November 19
well.
let me tell you.
she totally flattered me yesterday by posting ella scarlet's 1st birthday party on her blog! (go read it...) she had such wonderful things to say i was "cyber blushing". it was SUCH a big compliment considering i ADORE what this girl can do. i stumbled across her site awhile back & she's not only got a beautiful blog to visit with lots of inspiration and ideas...but she's also got THIS etsy site where you can purchase & download her super cute, super fresh & super fun party goods.
like this adorable gift tag from her new holiday collection
you've GOT to go check her out. her things make you WANT to throw a party...just because. it's all SUCH delicious eye candy.
so THANK YOU kim... if we lived close to each other...we'd be doing lunches together frequently! *wink*
and thanks to all of you for the sweet comments and positive feedback that have filled my blog and twitter page over the past 2 days. YOU girls know how to make THIS girl feel really good. *wink*
working on posting some "how did she do that?" tutorials over the next couple of days. i've gotten lots of different questions about different elements of the party and i'm more than willing to share all of the details.
so.
hold tight.
enjoy your thursday.
xoxo,
jess
Thursday, April 23

yes...i jumped from a post about desserts to something equally important. *smirking*
TiMe MaNAgeMeNt...ugh. do we EVER figure it out? you know, the "balance". the beautiful balance between making everyone else happy in your life while harmoniously keeping yourself satisfied?
i found this post from jessica sprague to be very enlightening. i have a strong feeling there are many of you out there who will benefit greatly from reading this as well. and i have to point out that i could soooo relate to her opening paragraph:
I'll be honest; I'm not a scheduled person. I'm more of a "go with the flow, see where the day takes me" kind of girl. But I do believe in the principles of time management, and one day I hope to get it right!
i have been told on more than one occasion how organized i am and how "together" i seem to be. ("seem" being the key word). my home, my life, on the other hand???
anyway...go check out her post - "finding the time to create". & if you don't have a google calendar set up yet, you just might after reading this.
i'm off to schedule some time to create...(after i get some "other" things done). *wink* and how about you? happy thursday!

Tuesday, April 14
it's a bit rainy and dreary on this tuesday morning. but here's a ray of sunshine to brighten the day:
i found this artist, (cathy nichols), yesterday and i'm just in love with her art collection. it's very whimsical and the colors she blends/uses are just scrumptious. i feel especially happy when i look at the first painting called "hello birdie" (even though i'm not a big bird lover)...and the middle piece of art is called "hello spring"...so cute. love those greens and blues. anyone can purchase her art through etsy. (which by the way....i LOVE etsy. it's a site for any artist to sell their handmade products...super cute darling things you can find over there. soooo many talented people. like an online craftmall?? and all you have to do is do a search for anything you may be looking for...easy). and i'm a super huge fan of "handmade".
moving on...
making this post really quick today. remember it's "tuesday" which means i've got plans "outside" of the house. it's my one-day-a-week guarantee of doing something unrelated to housework. and it's the day i've set aside to try and do something with my mom. we'll be attempting some badminton this morning - unless it's just too rainy. and then i have backup plans for getting some things done: paint store, returns to kohls, computer to my mom's, easter goods on discount, rubber protector thing-ies for some chairs of mine...etc. (i'm using the "stickies" feature on the iMac to keep track of things i'd like to get done. they are like little floating sticky notes you can color code for your desktop. i've currently got 7 going right now. one is for an ongoing grocery list of items i think of throughout the day - or when i run out of something, one is for future photography purchases i have found i need/want from the photographer's workshop, one is a "to-do", one is notes/links i have found to be helpful - also from the photographer's workshop and the other three are notes i've taken from the podcasts i listen to everyday). anyway...those stickies are a fantastic little feature.
i'm eating an apple and some natural peanut butter (from the publix deli), for breakfast. ella is in her activity seat - not too happy right now. (and she's officially 5 months old today - by the way). gotta get in the shower and get going. love to you all. have a "totally terrific" tuesday.
