iNSPiRE | Support + Celebrate :: The Fringe Hours Book

Tuesday, September 22

The other day I was reading from The Fringe Hours by Jessica N. Turner and I was deep into the section about comparison and how toxic it can be...if you allow it.

I felt moved to share my thoughts with you about this subject and I hope you'll weigh in on the topic because I'd love your feedback!!

This concept of falling prey to comparison isn't new to me, in fact, after discovering how profound of an impact playing the comparison game can have on my own life, I'd like to say I do a pretty good job at keeping myself benched. *wink*

With that said, we are all broken. We are all imperfect. And we can all easily find ourselves behind the wheel of what I call the Comparison Clunker.

There are the "Pinterest Potholes" that leave us feeling deflated, the social media traffic jams filled with all things shiny + faster + better that leave us feeling out of gas and then there's the "race to the finish" mindset of our society that causes us to grip the steering wheel so tightly that we often spin out of control and end up finding ourselves wrecked on the side of the road...helplessly watching the rest of the world speed by.

It can really feel that way...IF we let it.

Here are some paraphrased excerpts that really drive home this point from the The Fringe Hours book:
• Comparison is doing just as much damage as guilt can often do to a woman.
• Comparison can eat away at us, distract us from our blessings and our need for self-care.
• We see others who seem to be doing it all and have it all with what looks like little effort, so we think that is what our lives should look like as well.
• On social media, comparison is a catalyst for nagging feelings of disappointment, discontentment, frustration, and self-doubt.
• Pinterest cannot be your yardstick for who you are as a woman, what you should love, how you should cook, or what you should prioritize. It cannot be your yardstick for good parenting, thoughtfulness, or really anything in life.

That's good stuff right there!! Am I right?!

So how do we kick the Comparison Clunker to the curb?
The first thing Jessica N. Turner suggests is eliminating judgment....

She asks:
"Have you ever looked at another woman and judged something about her? Maybe it was the fact that she brought a store-bought dessert to the church potluck while everyone else brought homemade. Or maybe you judged a woman because you didn't feel like she was dressed appropriately. Or because you disagreed with the way she parented her children."

For me, I've come to the conclusion that judgment is often the act of deflecting our own ridiculous expectations + standards onto unsuspecting, innocent bystanders.

I shamefully admit I am guilty of this - not 100% of the time but most certainly more often than I care to admit.

Some of Turner's suggestions for overcoming judgment is:

1. Finding and recognizing the root of your judgment.

Once you've been able to determine the true emotion, (envy, dissastifaction, etc.), behind the judgment you are more likely to take a step back, turn the initial judgment into something different...something positive and perhaps be inspired to take the time to get to know the person and their story...which will lead to acceptance...and ultimately love.

2. Trading judgment for celebration.

I have to tell you, I immediately thought..."Oh I can do that...I already do that." And there are plently of women out there I know who do it as well. But then I took a minute, from a personal perspective, to dive deeper into what "celebrating others" should really LOOK like and more importantly what it should FEEL like.

Ask yourself this the next time someone you know, admire or follow on social media posts or shares something exciting about something they've accomplished and are proud of.
• Do you jump right up and offer them praise and support?  Or do you pause?
• Do you "like" their post immediately and leave an encouraging comment?
Or do you scroll past and then scroll back up after the guilt sets in?

"Liking" or "commenting" can LOOK as though you are celebrating that person...BUT are you really?

Are you actually applauding her success from a place of judgment? For instance, are you happy she's successful but are you quietly reveling in the regrets you think and perhaps even hope she'll have eventually because she must surely be sacrificing one aspect of her life, in one way or another, to be as successful as she is. (her family, her children, her health, her identity, her authenticity),

Do you look like her cheerleader but then find yourself judging her creativity, styling, home decor picks, baking, handwriting, art, parental decisions, hair style, weight, shoes, clothing, etc.?

The way you FEEL - what's coming from your heart - and the driving force behind your celebration of another person's successes are even more important than the act of you celebrating with that person.

Will you be superficial?
Or will you be sincere?

I have to tell you, from personal experience, I have been on both sides of the coin.
I have had superficial support from people I thought were my friends - & that feels pretty crappy.
I've also had sincere support - which  feels WAY better and feels noticeably different.

I think we all know when we are GETTING superficial and when we are GIVING it too.

With all of this weighing heavy on my mind...I've decided to really make this "Support + Celebrate - with sincerity" something I'm doing and thinking about on a more consistent basis.
If I feel judgment more than I feel genuine...I plan to correct that...immediately.

I'd love to hear what you think about the subject of comparison and your own experience with it.

I'm loving The Fringe Hours book and highly recommend it.
It's been very thought-provoking and inspiring.

"The Fringe Hours is not a book about doing more....it's a book about empowering women to do more for themselves so they can BE more...more creative, more fulfilled, more alive." - Jessica Turner

INSPIRE | Cycle of Inspiration :: My IG Art Prints

Wednesday, May 14

For those of you who follow my Instagram feed, you know that I post an original inspirational art print every day. (except on weekends).

I thought it would be fun, and maybe even enlightening, to fill you in on the process of how I come up with these art prints.

Every morning between 6:00a.m. and 8:00 a.m. I find time to sit quietly alone and read for a few minutes…in search of inspiration to start my day. (I don't use the entire 2 hour period…I just find some time within this 2 hour window).

Right now my selection of books includes Simple Abundance, Hands Free Mama and Everyday Grace.

I read Simple Abundance EVERY morning, Hands Free Mama once a week and Everyday Grace if I'm needing something more.

I take notes while I'm reading - writing on the pages of the book…mostly in pen…sometimes using my watercolor pencils.

After I finish reading, I scan back through any notes or areas I've highlighted and wait for inspiration.
Sometimes I know right away what I want to say/create…
sometimes it takes several minutes to come up with something…reworking and rewording until I like it.

The idea behind creating these daily art prints is to motivate, encourage, uplift, remind, push, reflect, empower and ALWAYS TO INSPIRE.

You might be surprised to know that it's ME I'm trying to inspire…and I'm ALWAYS thinking of my daughters…hoping these will be treasures they will reach for as they continue to grow and become women. There are often times I will post something with Clara, Ema or Ella specifically in mind…knowing a struggle or difficulty they may be experiencing.

I will even pick up on the characteristics of my daughters and even other women that inspire me and I'll create a quote based on the the strengths of that person and the way that I see them - or the way they've empowered me.

I have also created an "Instagram Art" page using the "Notes" feature on my iPhone so that I can log any quotes I randomly think of throughout my day - which happens quite a bit! So if I'm not "feeling" something from my reading, I'll reference my "notes" too.

Once I've got my quote figured out, I use the Rhonna Designs app to add splashes of color or graphics but mostly I use Phonto for creating the text.

And then after I'm done creating the visual…I write up a little blurb to further explain the quote and post it to my Instagram feed. Then I sit back and "marvel at the magic of it all". *wink*

I marvel at comments like, "this is exactly what I needed to hear today!", "Love it!" or "Oh yes! Truth! Thanks for the reminder!", or how about this one from today: "Your posts always speak to me! Have an awesome day!"

I'm so glad the inspiration I am seeking personally is able to spill over into the lives of other people who are also searching.

The Instagram Art Prints are always about moving forwardbecoming betterevolvingbeing gratefulloving the people in my lifefocusing on what matters mostfollowing my dreams and ultimately striving to be the very best "She"(me) I can be. There are so many things I hope to be one day…and these are just little reminders to help me get there! *wink*

And that my friends is how the cycle of inspiration works…
I love that the inspiration starts with me reading an inspirational book…which leads to me creating inspirational art prints…to me sharing those art prints with others via social media…which inspires others... who then share with their friends by reposting and tagging and finally…the sweet comments inspire ME! It all comes full circle.

I'm inspired…I share it…others are inspired…they share it…and I'm inspired that they are inspired! Ha!! Awesome! It really doesn't get any better than that!

The IG Art Prints I've shared here today are the ones I created when I was experiencing SNAP! Conference. I needed them. They actually tell a little story about how my whole SNAP! experience unfolded - if you read between the lines! *wink*

One other thing to note…
I actually had some of these turned into "polaroid prints" using Persnickety Prints.
Persnickety Prints can print anything directly from your IG feed…

Look how cute they turned out!!

I LOVE them!
I hope you enjoyed a little more insight into my process for creating these daily IG Art Prints.
More importantly, I hope you were inspired in some way.
Even if it is just to have your own IG Feed printed using Persnickety Prints! Ha!!

If you'd like to keep up with the daily Art Prints, you can follow me on INSTAGRAM here!

Love you guys - thanks for being here!

You'll be happy to know I was able to take Ema to her birthday lunch this afternoon! Yay!!
We, of course, went to our annual birthday lunch spot: Garden Gate Tea Room.
It's probably my favorite day with Ema as of late. She's 15 now and there are days/weeks when I feel like we just butt heads constantly. But today was a good day. Good conversation. Good attitude. Lots of smiles and probably a little too much dessert. *wink*

Today is one of those days when I feel like things are going pretty smoothly…
despite Clara having strep throat, Ella developing a slight cough and runny nose and J waking up this morning with a very sore throat too.

INSPIRE | She Makes What Matters Happen :: FREE Art Print

Monday, January 27

It's Monday and if you are like me you've got a to-do list staring at you that might seem a mile long…
or maybe you are even smack-dab in the middle of writing one right now.

Before we had down that busy road, consider with me the things that REALLY matter this week and be sure those things are on your list. These particular tasks should include things that will fill your soul, lift your spirits and that invite us to invest our time and attention into the lives of those we love. Our lists will all be different but here are a couple of things I've got on my own list for this week:

Tea Party with Ella.
Quality time with Clara.
Quality time with Ema.
Phone calls to my Mom and brother.
Return phone call to my aunt.
Thank you notes.
Special Gratitude Blog Post for Compendium.
Quiet time for reading/prayer. (everyday if possible)
Crafting time.

I plan to make time this week to make sure these simple things…the things that matter most to me…get done. My quality time with Clara could be a 15 minute conversation in her room before bed. A quick run up to the yogurt shop with Ema might give us a small window to connect and for me to just tell her how much I love her. Phone calls to those you love and thank you notes are the simple things that make the world go around. The point is…the things that matter most aren't typically the stressful deadlines or the overdue projects. It's not about "managing" our lives…it's about "living" them. And you aren't really living if you aren't connected and present in the lives of those you love. Right?

So how about something to motivate us all and keep us focused on that truth...

If you follow me on Instagram you are very well aware of the fact that I post an inspirational Art Print at least a few times a week - much like the one I'm sharing today. I call these my "She Said" quotes and they are meant to empower women. I create the quotes as I'm led and inspired and they often represent something I need reminding of in my own life. I started out writing them as daily inspirational lunch notes for my oldest daughter when she was going through some struggles last year. They have now taken on a life of their own. "She" is a combination of the person I am…as well as the person I aspire to be. I write/design/create these "She" quotes to inspire ME…my daughters…and other women. Plain and simple. And I know this whole concept was ultimately born from my love for the "She" book by Kobi Yamada.

I say all of that because I thought it would be fun to share today's "She Said" quote as a FREE download with you today. You can print this puppy out and frame it or hang it somewhere to keep you focused on what matters most. I've got three different versions for you to choose from. The white background shown at the beginning of the post and then two different chalkboard backgrounds shown below. (links for downloading are at the bottom of this post).

Chalkboard Background • Colored

Happy Monday everyone!

EMPOWER | Lara Casey Power Sheets

Thursday, January 16

Here's one of the other tools I'm using to help me "navigate"…Lara Casey Power Sheets.
I discovered them while researching the Emily Ley Simplified Planner I shared the other day - the first tool I started using to Navigate.

The package arrived with these darling Lara Casey postcards! I just LOVE the idea of passing along the inspiration onto someone else by dropping a postcard in the mail to a friend!

And I had to smile when I read this on the very front page of the Power Sheets bundle…really cute detail!

I had the opportunity to attend a 1 hour Lara Casey webinar yesterday and I'm definitely inspired.
I'm realizing more and more that creating to-do lists and using a planner isn't really about how many things you can get done. For me, (and it should be this way for all of us), it's more about using these things as tools to make sure you have time and energy for what matters most.

These power sheets are designed to help you figure out what really matters most to you. It's not about how to make long to-do lists and effectively cross things off. It's really not. I love what I'm learning so far.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Here are some other things that popped off the pages of the Power Sheets when they arrived as well as some quotes that struck a chord with me during the webinar yesterday:

"Life is too short to play small. I created each PowerSheet to help you strategically plan action steps to make what matters happen."

"Goals can be overwhelming if they aren't connected to what matters. They can make life busier…"

"Step into your dreams - make a mess along the way."

"Just because everyone is going in one direction doesn't mean you should too. Everyone could be wrong."

"Don't wait to do the good things that are on your heart."

"The journey is the good stuff."

"Live on purpose."

"Done is better than perfect."

"Perfect doesn't exist."

"You can't steal 2nd base and keep your foot on 1st."

"Busy is the enemy of peace."

"Don't move so fast you miss your life."

"Do the 'right' hard work."

"Baby steps count."

"Progress…not perfection."

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I'm hoping someone else out there needed to hear something I shared today.
Maybe you'll be inspired to try the PowerSheets too?
In any case, I will absolutely continue to share what I learn along the way!

Let me know if you've tried the Lara Casey PowerSheets and what your feedback is on them.
I'd love to know the things you all are doing to empower your life.

Hugs!!

KEEPiNG iT REAL
I had to laugh because I hadn't filled out any of my powersheets prior to the webinar yesterday.
I had been waiting to buy a binder to put them in. Wouldn't you know Lara specifically mentioned "Don't wait to buy the perfect binder or find the perfect pen…just start filling them out and make them messy…that's how you get to the good stuff." *wink*

INSPIRE | Racing vs. Pursuing

Tuesday, September 10

(Designed using the Rhonna Designs App on my iPhone).

I shared this on my Instagram feed and received a lot of likes and positive feedback about it so I thought it might be important to share here on the blog too...

RACING VS. PASSIONATELY PURSUING
Don't confuse "passionately pursuing" your dreams with frantically "racing" to make them happen. They are two very different mindsets. Racing requires complete focus on one goal - blocking out distractions, focusing on the weaknesses of "opponents" to help propel you to 1st place and using every bit of energy you've got to cross the finish line first - and by your own merits.

A passionate pursuit means to passionately "follow" and as you follow your dreams you draw inspiration from everything around you as you make your way; listening to your heart and letting it guide you down paths you didn't originally intend on traveling. It's about being curious along your journey, being open, reaching out to others to cheer them on in the pursuit of their own dreams and even taking the opportunity to stop and rest in order to reflect on how far you've come, celebrate the obstacles you've triumphed over, rehydrate, refuel and reevaluate. Passionately pursuing your dreams ultimately leads to reaching those dreams surrounded by the people who were part of your journey all along. See the difference?

I hope you were inspired!

KEEPiNG iT REAL
The inspiration behind the "She Said" quotes I've been sharing come
straight from my desire for my daughters and myself to "BE the 'SHE' " I write about.
The quotes are derived from my deep desire to transform all of my weaknesses into strengths.
They are, in a sense, personal daily lunch box notes I write to myself and instead of tucking them into a lunch tote, brown bag or lunch pail, I share them with the world through my blog and Instagram.

SHARE | FREE Hand-Lettered Chalkboard Art Print on I Heart Naptime

Thursday, August 8

Hi everyone!!

After seeing some cute Anders Ruff printables on Instagram a few weeks back, (posted by Jamielyn from I Heart Naptime) I reached out to Jamielyn and told her to let me know if she ever wanted me to design something for her to share on her blog.  The next thing I know, she requested I design a cute Chalkboard Art Print for the kitchen. I got right to work sketching out some ideas. (the image above is the original sketch I came up with and posted on my Instagram Feed)

I came up with an original quote and then went to work on a hand-sketched and hand-lettered illustration... tweaked it a bit...and ended up with this...

I just LOVE the inspirational quote!!
Although I have a tendency to focus on the "baking" aspect of being in the kitchen...
and I originally went in that direction with the quote...
I ended up making sure the art print applies to bakers and cooks alike!! *wink*

I hope you love it as much as I love how it turned out!!
Head on over to I Heart Naptime to download the FREE 8x10 or 11x14 right now!

TIP FOR PRINTING CHALKBOARD ANYTHING:
Don't print from your home printer and drain your print cartridge.
It costs pennies to have them printed at  +Staples+Office Depot, Inc. or your local printer of choice.
I printed one 8x10 and one 11x14 of the Kitchen Art Print and it cost me .58 cents total for both.
They were both printed onto white card stock too!!

Besides that...I love hand-lettering and I'm thrilled the Chalkboard Art trend over the last couple of years has caused me to dive back into it again!!

LiFE | The Anchor Cake

Friday, June 28

This has been on my mind a lot lately...
This is a quote I came up with this morning and then shared on my Instagram feed.

Focused on my most important, enduring & beautiful work...

I hope we will all find ways this weekend to connect!

EMPOWER | A Beautiful Mess App

Tuesday, May 21

Among the projects and chaos of life...
I've also found time to dive into a FUN, brand new photo app!

The ABM app is currently available in the +iPhone Apps section of +iTunes  - (with hopes of an Android version in the future).
The app comes with fun doodles, a variety of backgrounds, playful borders, a handful of fonts and some cute phrases  to add to your photos prior to posting them on Instagram. (and other social media)

I've been tapping into my inner poet lately -  the one I left behind shortly after high school.
I've been writing my own "SHE" lunch box notes to include in my oldest daughter's lunches in the mornings.
I decided it was time to start writing them down for keeps...
and I've been sharing them on Instagram with hopes of inspiring and empowering others.
(By the way...I'd LOVE for you to FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM and keep up-to-date with what I've got going on behind the scenes. *wink*)

With that said...
When the ABM App launched - it seemed perfectly natural...

iNSPiRE | Art Print • Discover Limitlessness

Friday, September 28

J surprised me this week...
He came home with an inspirational art print he picked up from Hallmark.

"Let it Go" from The Kelly Rae Roberts Collection by Demdaco

It's something I hadn't seen before...
and absolutely something I would've picked out on my own.
(sometimes it surprises me at how well he knows me).

As I read the artist's information on the back...
I discovered Kelly Rae Roberts was a social worker at one point in her life...
prior to her decision to follow "her heart's passion to become an artist".

I continued to read about how her art "expresses honesty and tenderness...is lighhearted and colorful".
And then something Kelly said jumped out at me:

"My hope is that my work invokes a sense of clarity and peace inside of you as you walk your own path in life,
and that it inspires you to discover your own limitlessness".

I knew instantly the art print I would be creating for you this week...

I'm SO excited to be working on it.

Looking forward to sharing all of the bits and pieces as everything slowly unfolds...

SHARE | Art Print • I Was Here

Friday, August 24

Remember the video I shared with you earlier this week...
That amazing World Humanitarian Video with Beyoncé singing "I Was Here"?
If you missed it...
you should absolutely go watch it right now so you understand the rest of this blog post...

I was so completely inspired by it...
I downloaded the song from iTunes...
and I've been listening to it over...and over.

I started working on an Art Print I could share with you...
almost immediately after I saw the video and heard the words...
and got the chills.

I hope you like what I've come up with...

ART PRiNT | I Was Here (the "Present" Edition)
(the black text should be read & then the grey text should be read)

ART PRiNT | I Was Here (the "Past" Edition)
(the white text should be read & then the muted text should be read)

Download the FREE 16x20 "I Am Here" .pdf file HERE

Did you like that I included both "present" and "past" wording...
Reminding us of what we should be doing NOW...
So we can later reflect on all the good we were able to accomplish?
You should read the "present text" first
And then the "past text"...

I LOVE the end result. I hope you do too.

Mostly though...
I hope you were inspired.

TiP:

You can always go DOWN in size but don't go up:
For example...download the 16x20 art print but have it printed as an

I'm not kidding when I said I played this song over and over...
I play it in the car...
I listen to it while I'm designing...
I sing it or hum it when I don't have the music to listen to...
AND...
believe it or not...
I have had the song in my head as I've drifted off to sleep. *wink*
Pretty much non-stop listening and obsessing over the song.
I've got the amazing lyrical runs words just about memorized now.
I've been singing it at the top of my lungs in the car...
sometimes with Ema, my 13 year old - she loves it just as much.
Although I pretend I'm Beyoncé when I'm singing it... (oh yes I do)
I really only sound good when the music is up loud enough to drown out blend with my voice. *blushing*
It's quite liberating, actually.
You should try it if you don't already do it.

iNSPiRE | Barnes and Noble

Monday, August 6

One of my very favorite things to do is spend time in a bookstore.
I had the unexpected opportunity to do so when I took my older girls to the mall over the weekend.
Realizing my 13 and 16 year old don't need me for the actual school clothes shopping process anymore...*sniffle*
I found my way to the Barnes and Noble located in the mall.

For me...
There is ALWAYS inspiration waiting to be discovered in every nook and cranny of a bookstore.
Sometimes I have a specific purpose for information I'm looking for...
Other times I just browse until I stumble upon something that makes my heart race. *wink*

Case in point...my first discovery in the Home and Gifts section...
A super cool paperweight with a quote by Benjamin Franklin. LOVE!

My passion for journals drew me to this gorgeous, unique, textured, bindless beauty...

And then this quote jumped off the shelf at me as I made my way to find something to read...

I was able to snag an empty bench in the kids section and got comfortable...
(which was the perfect photo opportunity for the "Photo-A-Day" prompt on Saturday: "Where I sat")

I just browsed book covers...
book pages
and walked the aisles...
discovering new information...
a couple of diy's I want to try...(and will be sharing)
and ultimately...
I left uplifted and inspired.
LOVE that feeling.

Last week was quite hectic.
Ok...
It. was. SERIOUSLY crazy.
LOTS of orders in the shoppe...
A LOT of running around for appointments...
Emotionally stressful since J's dad still hadn't been released from the hospital due to complications from having surgery the week before. (He was able to go home Saturday...yay!!)

I'm so grateful to have been able to have some COMPLETE quiet time to myself at Barnes and Noble...
even if it was only for an hour.
Those moments are far and few between...
which makes me most appreciative when they happen.
