iNSPiRE | A new adventure...

Monday, September 26

In a world where technology has the tendency to dehumanize our communication, our work, our relationships, our connections, our creativity and our overall life experiences, I'm finding myself choosing more and more of what makes me "feel"...

By that I mean I'm choosing things that uplift, inspire, touch, add joy to and give more meaning to the lives of those around me...and to myself.

Just like this sign says, I've been looking for ways to have my cake and eat it too and I finally decided it was up to me to put on my big girl apron and bake the darn thing!

My work has been shifting in small ways over the past couple of years...intentionally...pointing me in the direction of less time in front of the computer.

I've longed to do more hand-crafted projects that would marry my love of graphic design with my desire to give more life to the inspirational quotes I've been posting regularly on my Instagram feed. This desire, (along with some other life stuff), has given way to a new business adventure with my daughter, Ema.

Let me introduce you to the brand new...

This little creative division of Pen + Paper Flowers was something I started to dream about two years ago and just hasn't left me alone since.  Earlier this year I reached out to a couple of friends to run my ideas by them. I definitely had hesitation, especially with the signs, since I have friends that make signs already and I didn't want to come across as a copy cat.

However, one friend, in particular, pointed out what a natural transition all of this was.  And that's how my heart felt too. Using my graphic design talents to create handmade items that will add warmth and charm to any home seems to be the perfect extension to what I already do and love.

So...as much as I love the idea of having a cute storefront somewhere, I also know the long demanding hours something like that requires and I did not want to take more time away from my family.

I'm not really interested in another online store either. The purpose of Willow + Wildflowers Market is to get me out of the house and interacting with people in my community on top of getting me out from in front of the computer.

Insert Trader Mae's, a local furniture and decor market.
My daughter and I are renting a small space to display the items we make and aside from restocking and keeping the space pretty, we don't even have to be up there.

Right now, (and by right now, I mean we literally just opened this past Saturday), we are doing hand-painted wooden signs. My goal is to eventually offer a line of pillows along with some signature homemade linen sprays I've been making for our own home.

The goal here is to keep things simple. Simple signs, simple pillows and simple linen sprays. That's it.

Willow + Wildflowers Market is a line of home decor items that I would personally have displayed in my own home. So yes, there are a lot of "nods" to my love for baking and my vintage farmhouse style.

Each piece is cut, sanded, painted, stained and hand-painted by Ema and I.
We didn't know what we were doing when we started. We just started.

Sometimes you just have to jump...and we did.

The "Love is always the Answer" sign above is the first sign to have sold. (thanks Mom)! *wink*
I have no idea what will become of Willow + Wildflowers Market or where this will take us.
What I do know is this is an opportunity to strengthen my relationship with one of my daughters as we work side-by-side. And it feels good.

It also feels good to have a paintbrush in my hands again...creating the small details of these signs. There's just something extra special about something handmade. And to think these signs will be hanging in the homes of people in my community...well that's just pretty special too.

I'd love to know what you all think of the signs!!
But more importantly, I'm wondering if you've been feeling the same way about technology and the influence it's having on the maker community.  I'd love to hear your thoughts and creative things you've been doing to step away from all of your devices.

If you love what you see and want to see more, follow the Willow + Wildflowers Instagram feed for behind-the-scenes sneak peeks of new items and our process for making these.

As always, thanks for being part of my journey...
xoxo,
Jess

Ema and I literally had one sign made when we were surprised with a phone call on Monday evening that we had an official space at Trader Mae's if we wanted it. We spent the next 4 days painting and creating 8 signs to have up just in time for the big Fall Festival on Saturday and Sunday. Eeks!

FOUND | Rustic Farmhouse Safety Pins

Friday, April 24

Love. at. first. sight.
That's what it was when I stumbled upon these oversized decorative rustic safety pins from Ballard Designs.  I've been trying to add a little charm to my mudroom - which is really just a laundry room but I like the way "mudroom" sounds better so that's what I call it - and I really think these are going to work perfectly.

They come in a set of 3 for a really reasonable price so I snatched up these giant safety pins this week and can't wait for them to arrive.

I love the product description from the Ballard Designs website:
"Based on real pins we found at a flea market, our hanging Safety Pins are authentic down to the tiniest detail. In fact, they even open! Each style features a different finish and closure design popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries".

Did you read that!!?? They even open! How cute!!

So anyway...like a best friend should do, I HAD to share them with you...just in case you think you want to snatch them up for your mudroom...or laundry room...or even your baby's nursery too!!

Want them? Click the link below:

Not interested? That's okay.
You can keep busy with other things like...
1. Entering to win the $100 Shutterfly Gift Card I'm giving away
2. Finishing up the Keep It Simple book we've been reading this month
3. Picking up a copy of The Secret Language of Flowers we'll be starting May 1st.

Love you guys!

What is it with me and old, rusty things?
Do you know when I was first newly married and struggling to make ends meet, (over 20 years ago), I actually recycled wooden cable wire spools to use as side tables and coffee tables. To think that it's actually a "trendy" thing now kind of makes me smile. (and I can say it's trendy because it was actually mentioned in the Keep It Simple book we've been reading this month - how crazy is that?!)

RESTYLE | The Abandoned Dresser

Wednesday, September 12

Here she is folks...
Meet the newest addition to our family.

She was sadly abandoned and needed a bit of love when we first met her...
COLLAGE1

But we spruced her up a bit...
(Ella totally helped me sand her down, remove the hardware and helped roll the first coat of paint on).
COLLAGE2

We added a fresh coat of Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt paint...
(which is a subtle blue-grey color - even though these photos make it look like my favorite color: creamy white)
Added some wooden accents to the top drawers...
and then gave her the ole rub down using sandpaper to complete her "Vintage French Farmhouse" look...
and we think she's just gorgeous.

COLLAGE3

Although she hasn't found a permanent spot yet...
I'm keeping her here for now...
in anticipation of some upcoming FUN photo shoots.
(Don't mind the decor either - I quickly threw those on top to make her seem a little more "settled in")

(you can see her subtle blue-grey color a bit better in this photo since she's up against a creamy white wall)

Welcome to your new home.
We hope you love it here.

Materials & Cost:
Dresser - $0
Paint - $0 Sherwin-Williams • Sea Salt (leftover from a previous project) $0
Paint Brush & Mini Roller - $0 (Paint supplies on-hand)
Sandpaper - $0 (leftover from another project)
Wooden Accents - $6 Lowes
Wood Glue - $0 (already had in the garage)
Total: $6

Process:
• Remove hardware
• Lightly sand the entire piece so the paint will stick.
• Wipe down the furniture to remove the dust created from sanding.
• Glue on wood accents to drawers. (I skip the whole "wait 24 hours to dry" suggestion on the bottle. I figure the paint
will be the added glue it needs to stay put). *wink*
• Apply 1st coat of paint. (I prefer using a brush but Ella used a mini roller to help).
• Add hardware back on.
• Apply 2nd coat of paint with brush.
• Let it dry a bit. (I'm pretty impatient so I don't do the whole "let it sit overnight" thing).
• Sand the edges, features that stick out and the top in just a few places. (Thank you Ema for helping out with this part)
• Bring it inside the house and admire.

I still need to add a protective coating to her - which I have in the garage...
I've just been lazy.

This is NOT my first "restyle" project.
I've repainted beds, armoires, and various other pieces of furniture in our home.
(I'll have to share those at some point too).

I'm proud of myself for two reasons:
• I didn't let her sit for months before I did something with her. (which can be pretty typical of me).
3 days from the time we brought her home I jumped into the project. Yay me!!
• $6 was all I spent - besides my time - Can't get much better than that.

Oh...
and I have to just say...
I've been approached several times now by both of my older girls, Clara (16) and Ema (13)
stating their case for the many reasons why the new furniture should go into their rooms.
No way.
No how.
She's mine. *wink*
