HAPPY | Chalkboard Popcorn Bar :: Barn Wedding

Wednesday, June 4

You have no idea how happy this makes my heart!!
I worked with a customer to create a custom "He Popped the Question" sign for the popcorn bar she was setting up for a wedding - a sign to coordinate with the Chalkboard Popcorn Bar Collection I designed.  She just sent me pictures of how everything turned out and

PINCH ME!
My friends from Kernel Seasons emailed me on Friday to let me know they'd just seen one of my Popcorn Bar photos featured on the TODAY Show.

They were doing a segment on "6 Wedding Ideas inspired by Pinterest" and all of a sudden…there it was…my photo! (the exact spot on the video where my photo is shown is 1:48 - just in case you don't want to watch the whole thing). *wink*

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

I shared the news on my Instagram feed on Friday afternoon but if you happened to miss it I wanted to share it here too!

Here's my Popcorn Board on Pinterest - I'd love for you to follow along!
Follow Pen N' Paper Flowers's board Popcorn on Pinterest.

A HUGE "Thank You!" to Kernel Seasons for taking time to let me know they'd seen it - it totally started my weekend off right! If it wouldn't have been for that email, I would've never known it had ever been featured. Kind of crazy, right?

KEEPiNG iT REAL
Was I totally bummed that the original source (ME) was not mentioned in the segment?
Absolutely. It would've been nice to have been contacted by Karson & Butler to give me a heads-up about the feature but regardless…I'm seriously flattered one of my wedding ideas/photos was selected and featured! *wink*

POPCORN | Popcorn Cupcake Recipe, Kernel Season's Giveaway + TRYditions

Tuesday, December 17

I've got POPCORN on the brain this week - for several different reasons.

It all started with posting the Restyled Chalkboard Popcorn Bar last week. I received so many emails about how much you all loved the new edition to the original Rustic Popcorn Bar I styled - sweet, sweet emails from brides asking for tips on incorporating this idea into their wedding. I even gave out 3 FREE SETS of the new Chalkboard Style Popcorn Bar printables here on the blog!

All of this popcorn talk reminded me of a recipe I'd been wanting to make. I discovered the recipe in the September issue of Food Network Magazine. There was actually an entire section dedicated to "Fun Popcorn Treats" and the Golden Butter Popcorn Cupcakes recipe was what caught my eye and made me purchase the magazine. Not to mention the cute Kids Mini Mag inside. (there were some ideas in the mini mag I was going to use for Ella's 5th birthday party but I ended up not having time to execute the ideas - a recurring theme in my life).

Needless to say I was very intrigued by the thought of a Popcorn Cupcake! So just last week, after posting the long-awaited Restyled Popcorn Bar - I knew it was time to finally try out the cupcake recipe.

If you'd like to try out the recipe HERE'S THE LINK.
Also, here are some of my recommendations

TIPS:
1. The popcorn topping I used on these Golden Butter Popcorn Cupcakes was made using Kernel Season's Popping Corn and it popped perfectly!

2. I did not crush up the white chocolate covered popcorn to incorporate into the whipped topping as recommended. I didn't think it would look as pretty when I piped it onto the cupcake and honestly, I didn't see any chunks in the photo of the cupcake shown in the magazine. The chocolate covered popcorn was a little on the chewy side for my tastes. I would've liked it to be more crunchy. (Which is another reason I didn't add it to the whipped topping).

3. I think I would wait to add the popcorn topping just before serving. Like I mentioned above, the popcorn tasted a little chewy to me so I'm not sure if it was because of sitting in the whipped topping or if it's just from the white chocolate coating?

4. I personally would add a little fleur de sel to the popcorn topping - maybe just after you've added it to the cupcake just before serving?  I prefer the salty & sweet combination. In fact, I'm thinking instead of adding a white chocolate coated popcorn topping, I'd probably prefer to add some kettle corn instead. (See this recipe) That would satisfy both my salty & sweet craving along with giving it more crunch.

Now that you've got a fun Popcorn Cupcake recipe to try out…it's time for more POPCORN fun!

How about a FUN GIVEAWAY sponsored by the awesome people at Kernel Season's! After posting the Restyled Chalkboard Popcorn Bar last week, Kernel Season's reached out to me to extend a FUN offer to my PNPF blog readers!

And thank you to Kernel Season's for offering up such a fun treat to PNPF blog readers and fans!

One final thought on popcorn…
Ema has requested we do our annual "TRYdition" of stringing cranberry and popcorn. I call it a "try"dition because there are some family traditions I've started over the years that we LOVE doing (or maybe it's just me that loves doing them?) but sometimes we just aren't able to squeeze in every year. So I guess since these traditions don't actually occur every. single. year.  they can't truly be considered a tradition in the authentic sense of the word. So I just made up the word "TRYdition" - anyone else have some tryditions of your own you'd like to share? (because I'm curious and also because I'm looking to eliminate some of the guilt I feel for not being able to follow through on every single brilliant, cute, fun tradition I've ever started - which would be absolutely impossible, by the way). *wink*

KEEPiNG iT REAL
I was really hesitant about what the turnout would be when making the Golden Butter Popcorn Cupcakes. I brought 8 of them to a church activity and let some of our church friends taste-test them.
They all gave them a thumbs up and agreed a little fleur de sel might be a good addition otherwise they had great flavor and the "cake" part was nice and moist.

RESTYLE | Chalkboard Popcorn Bar Collection

Wednesday, December 4

At long last I am finally posting the pictures of the re-styled Rustic Popcorn Bar I created for our Neighborhood Fall Family Picnic. (See the original version HERE).

I'm loving the versatility of this new "Fancy Chalkboard" Edition Popcorn Bar.
I've had so many people purchase the original Rustic Popcorn Bar Printables for weddings…
I decided to create this chalkboard version specifically for brides (and party planners) to be able to incorporate this fun idea into the wedding details, (or birthday party, anniversary, family reunion, fall festival), while still being able to tie in the wedding/event colors - or at least have it blend nicely.

I did a few simple things to alter the look of the original cart...

LIFE | Neighborhood Fall Family Picnic

Friday, October 18

I wanted to send you off into the weekend with some great images from the Fall Family Picnic we had a couple of weekends ago.

I was in charge of organizing it so I was all about trying to come up with a variety of activities to keep the kids (and adults) busy. But I wanted the activities to be pretty simple so there wasn't a lot of prep work that needed to be done for myself or for the other volunteers that helped to make this all happen!

We are fortunate to live in a neighborhood that is centered around an expansive area of...

Gorgeous old oaks and a beautiful open field of green grass.

There's also a pretty gazebo on one end
our typical meeting place for neighborhood events like this one.

I'll label the photos so you know what's going on in the images and then if you want to pull off one of these for your own neighborhood (or for family events, birthday celebrations and my favorite…family reunions!!)
you can find more of the detailed information at the bottom of the post.

CRAFTS TABLE FOR THE KIDS

A FEW OF THE SIGNS FOR THE PICNIC GAMES

ROUNDING UP THE KIDS TO LET THE GAMES BEGIN

PUMPKIN RUN

SACK RACES

BOBBING FOR APPLES

HANGING WITH FRIENDS

TIC TAC TOE YARD GAME

PIE EATING CONTEST

There were plenty of activities to keep the little ones busy but the highlight of my day was the very last event of the Family Picnic - the pie-eating contest!!

We wrangled up 5 willing (and not so willing) participants. One of them was a (SUPER) mom who volunteered to sit alongside the line up of male contestants. Her husband couldn't be there that day and so she sat in his place to make the day memorable for her kids! If that's not LOVE that then I don't know what is.

We presented each contestant with a plain pumpkin pie and explained the rules. (They had 2 minutes to finish as much of the pie as they could and whoever ate the most would be declared the winner).

BUT just before we started the contest, I presented the crowd of onlookers with a question: "Wouldn't everyone agree pie is so much better with some whipped cream?" Of course they agreed so myself and a couple of assistants squirted on a generous helping of whipped cream - which was all a ploy for better photographs! *wink*

It was a really close call between two of the more competitive males in the bunch.
The prize? A gift card to Perkins for...what else??? A fabulous pie! Ha!! *wink*

The day was absolutely FUN! It's something I'll remember for a long time to come.
There were a lot of families, couples, both older and younger and lots of kids who took part.
We had about 60+ people participate so I was happy to have such a good turnout.

The only bummer about the day was that neither of my older girls were able to attend due to a competition they were participating in AND they both had Homecoming that same night.

HERE IS THE BREAKDOWN ON THE ACTIVITIES

Pumpkin Run (which was really a fast walk)
Object: Balance a mini pumpkin on your head and walk quickly to the finish line.

Tic Tac Toe Loved this brilliant, simple idea I randomly came up with.
Use mini frisbees as the tac tac toe pieces.
Spray paint the game board in the grass.

The fact that you can set this game up anywhere makes it great for any outside activity/event and I will DEFINITELY be doing this again. The plastic playing pieces are durable and weather resistant and set up and clean up is a cinch!

Was thinking you could use bucket lids as game pieces too.
I created an "X" on some of the frisbees using duct tape and then left the other frisbees plain for the "O" pieces.

Bobbing for Apples
We set up a long bench with individual pails and one apple in each pail right next to the gazebo.
(We needed a water resource and there was already a hose there).
For sanitary purposes we refilled the water and added a new apple for each new contestant.

Crafts Tables
Craft #1: Decorated White Paper Lunch Sacks
We had the kids decorate paper bags when they arrived at the picnic with crayons and foam autumn leaf stickers. The idea was for them to then use the bag to put the small prizes they'd be receiving at each game station.

Craft #2: Coloring Page
We provided Fall themed coloring pages for the kids to color.

Craft #3: Scarecrow Foam Craft
Scarecrow Foam Craft Packages were given to the kids interested in making a scarecrow.

3-Legged Race
I cut strips of fabric from my stash of material and kept these in a metal bucket right next to the sign for
racers to grab and put back as they were done.

Sack Race
Grain sacks would've been so much more appropriate but we just used pillowcases for the races.

Corn Hole
We had a corn hole game set up - even though there are no photos to share.
Thanks for bringing this to the picnic Renee!!

Raffle Contests
Attendees were given tickets as they signed in to the picnic.
If they RSVP'd prior to the picnic they earned extra tickets at sign in.

Raffle Prize #1: Cupcake Delights Gift Card - our favorite local cupcakery
Raffle Prize #2: Starbucks Gift Card and package of SB Pumpkin Coffee
Raffle Prize #3: Kernel Seasons Movie Night Prize Pack

GAME PRIZES
We had different prizes at each game station which included the following:
- stickers
- finger pulls
- variety of candy
- rainbow loom bracelets - made by a sweet 9 year old girl in our neighborhood and donated as part of the picnic prizes!

FOOD/DRINKS
The neighborhood association provided subs and water bottles for everyone.
Attendees were asked to bring a side dish - and boy did they! We had two long tables packed with delicious picnic foods! There was also a Popcorn Bar set up and it was a hit. (more details HERE).

PHOTOS
All of the photos you see here were taken by other people.
My sweet friend and neighbor, Allison, took a few photos and the rest were taken by her dad.
I'm so grateful they were able to snap these for me to be able to look back on all of the fun details from the day.

VOLUNTEERS & THANK YOUS
I'm also grateful to the handful of volunteers that showed up with tables, chairs, ice, trash cans and willing hands to man some of the game/activity stations and set everything up and then take it all down. It was definitely a collaborative effort and I couldn't have made it all happen without their help! (Amy, Allison, Renee, Joan, Stu & Perry). Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!

Of course...I have to also thank my stepdad for helping me re-work the popcorn cart to make it presentable for the picnic. It had been sitting for nearly two years and the top wood piece needed to be replaced and I wanted the two front posts removed that I had used to create the canopy on the original Popcorn Cart. He also showed up on the day of the event with his truck to help us get the popcorn cart to the designated picnic area. Thank you Rick!!

J takes no part in the preparations for any of the events/parties I plan and organize out of protest in a sense because he knows how busy I already am with running multiple businesses, managing a household and having a busy schedule with three children. He doesn't support the idea of me volunteering (or getting volunteered) to do things like this.

HOWEVER, I have to say he always comes through on the actual day of the event and helps me execute the last minute details that need to be taken care of. (transporting the popcorn cart, picking up the food items, stopping by Sam's for the bulk paper products and water bottles, set up and clean up). I was exceptionally grateful on the day of the picnic when he shooed me off from the event early to be able to help my two older girls get ready for their special Homecoming night together! He thinks I always take on too much and I know in a lot of ways he's right. At the same time I love doing things like this and if there weren't for more people like "me" (willing to take on too much) then I believe the world would be a very different place...with absolutely less celebrations - that's for sure! Ha!!

Because of the Homecoming, I ended up having to leave the picnic early and didn't make it back to help with clean up! To make things worse, my girls weren't ready before the sun went down so I didn't get the photos I wanted using natural light. Despite that, here are some photos from their big night!

KEEPiNG iT REAL - PICNIC UNPLUGGED
UNPLUGGED #1
I only picked up a total of 6 mini frisbees for the Tic Tac Toe game. (3 X's and 3 O's). It wasn't until someone pointed it out that I realized I'd made an error! You might only need 3 X's or 3 O's to get 3-in-a-row but you actually need 4-5 of each color in order to REALLY play the game! Oops!

UNPLUGGED #2
The sack race almost didn't happen because we ended up having only two pillowcases.
At the brilliant suggestion of one of the neighbors we turned the race into a team relay - having the kids put on and take off the pillowcases as part of the race. Yay! We solved the dilemma and played on. THEN....one of the pillowcases was completely shredded after a couple of the older kids raced with them so this particular activity was very short-lived. (we got some great photos though before it ended).

UNPLUGGED #3
The large black trash bags I gave J for the trash cans ended up being too small so we couldn't line our trash cans with anything. Yucky clean up!

UNPLUGGED #4
Boys + Popcorn Bar = Disaster
As a mother of 3 girls I don't have any experience with how boys operate - except the memories I have growing up with my younger brother. I'm sure not all 8-10 year old boys are like this but I was a little taken back when I looked over to see a group of boys sitting down at a table with plates piled high and spilling over with popcorn and candy toppings from the popcorn bar. (I guess the brown bags that were provided to them weren't big enough)? Then, as I listened to their conversation, I realized they had filled their water bottles with reeses pieces (from the popcorn bar) and were shaking them up to make the water turn into something that looked like something I won't repeat. Yuck!

UNPLUGGED #5 - A Black Eye
This was actually pre-picnic but it's worth mentioning!
When I picked Ella up from pre-school on Friday, the day before the picnic, she had a HUGE shiner/black eye. It was swollen and cut and looked like she'd joined the MMA. Seriously. She had apparently bumped it (really hard) on the monkey bars while on the playground. But guess what?! None of the teachers even knew because Ella never cried!! What?!
They noticed it when the kids lined up to go back inside the classroom and by that time it was almost time for school to be dismissed. My poor sweet girl.

She's such a tough cookie.
I have to give her daddy credit for that because he's always doing things to try to toughen her up.
(Wrestling with her and writing off boo-boos as if they're non-existent or no big deal).
I'm pretty much opposite of that - although I've gotten MUCH better with time and multiple kids.

You can hardly see it in the couple of photos in this post thankfully but trust me - I was freaked out!
It was so much worse on Friday so I was so grateful it wasn't as swollen on Saturday.
I was so sad to have her attend the picnic looking like we'd beaten her. *wink*
It's almost all gone now - just a tee tiny bit of yellowing left.
Too bad it wasn't closer to Halloween when it happened - we could've played off of it for her costume. A Boxer? Monster? Frankenstein? We could've put on an eye patch and called her a PIRATE. Ha! I'm kidding!!

SIDE NOTES:
Don't laugh! Did you know I had never even stepped foot into a Starbucks until I went and picked up the gift card for one of the Raffle Ticket Winners? I'm not a coffee drinker so there's been no reason for me to check it out. Can you believe that? I did eye some tasty treats while I was in there though! *wink*

CRAFTS | Pretty Brown Paper Bags

Wednesday, October 16

I'm working on getting all of the photos edited and prepped for posting of the Popcorn Bar I created for our neighborhood Fall Family Picnic.

While I'm finishing those up I wanted to share a small, but super cute detail I included from the Popcorn Bar.

Decorative Edged Brown Paper Bag Liners
for the Candy Popcorn Toppings

I often include this craft punch technique when creating paper party accessories - specifically when it comes to kraft paper or paper lunch sacks. (white or brown).

I love taking an ordinary lunch sack and making it extraordinary using my favorite EK Success Vintage Doily Craft Punch.

It's such a sweet and simple detail but it really makes a big difference.

Here's how I did it:
1. Using scissors, cut a good portion of the upper part of the brown paper bag off.
2. Use the Martha Stewart Vintage Doily Craft Punch to create a simple but pretty decorative edge along the top.
3. Open the brown paper bag and use fist to push it into and around the inside edges of the tin pail.
4. Fold the decorative edges over the sides of the pail and then add the candy toppings.

KEEPiNG iT REAL
The day I tried to re-shoot this new "Chalkboard" edition of the Popcorn Bar it was SO stinking windy. I was getting so frustrated because my large popcorn poster was flapping in the wind and my Directions sign kept toppling over.
By some miracle, I managed to get some good shots and will be posting them soon!

BEHIND THE SCENES | More good stuff

Friday, October 4

It's grind time here at my house.
Tomorrow is the big day for our Neighborhood Fall Family Picnic and
I've been working on final preparations to make sure it all comes together nicely.
Which also means there's been no extra time for blogging this week - as you could tell! *wink*

Thought I'd send you off into the weekend with more behind-the-scenes photos into the random bits and pieces of my week:

Adorable Halloween goodies from The TomKat Studio
In love with these items and can't wait to share what I'm doing with all of this.
Find these items and so much more at The TomKat Studio Shop.

New fave Ditto Dots washi tape from Doodlebug Design, Inc.
Totally perfect colors for Ella's Rainbow Unicorn party coming up in November.

Halloween Decor for The Pastry Pedestal
The scrapbooking aisle of your local craft store is such a good friend to
The Pastry Pedestal and the NEW Platforms!! Not to mention so are store-bought pastries! *wink*
I'll share more deets next week.

New labeling for the Popcorn Bar on Saturday
Loving the new updated "Chalkboard" edition of the Rustic Popcorn Bar Collection.

Kernel Season's Popcorn Spritzer Makeover
It's amazing what a little brown paper bag can do.
I'll be sharing more details of what else I used brown paper bags to create for the Fall Family Picnic.

New PNPF Branding and Business Cards
You've had to notice the new look of the blog?!
These are my matching business cards I received a few weeks ago.
I always order the mini business cards from moo.com - They are my fave!

There's more...
but there's no more time! *wink*
Story of my life right now.

I hope you all have a GREAT weekend!
Believe it or not, even though there's still so much more to do for the Fall Family Picnic...
I'm not stressing about it. I've been pretty calm - up to this point.
I think it's just wisdom as I get older - knowing the world isn't going to end if every little detail I dreamed of doesn't play out. In fact - simple is better.

Now that doesn't mean skipping the small details altogether...
it just means picking and choosing the small details that matter most! Right?

KEEPiNG iT REAL
I'm really looking forward to the pie-eating contest on Saturday - it's going to be the highlight of my weekend!
J and some of the other menfolk from the neighborhood are going to be participating
so I can't wait to see how it all plays out!

BEHIND THE SCENES | Family Picnic Popcorn Bar

Tuesday, October 1

While it seems I'm being pulled in 100 different directions...
I want to share with you one of the things I'm working on behind the scenes.

I mentioned I'm in charge of the Fall Family Picnic for our neighborhood this Saturday.
One of the elements I thought would be fun to incorporate is the Popcorn Bar I created for a Family Reunion over 2 years ago! (Yes, it's been that long - craziness I tell ya!)

The original "Rustic" rendition of the Popcorn Bar (shown above) has been one of my post popular posts and a hot seller in my shoppe. I get requests to customize the printables for weddings and birthday parties all of the time.

Take for instance this awesome customized version I did awhile back for a customer hosting a birthday party for her son...

Blue, Orange and Charcoal Grey Textured Edition

I've been working on releasing a NEW Chalkboard version of this collection for some time now - working on it as time allows. Prepping for the Fall Family picnic was just the push I needed to finish up the new collection so I can use these new printables on Saturday!

Popcorn Bar - Chalkboard Edition

I LOVE how this updated version is even more versatile than the original - lending itself to so many more celebration types.

It can be fancy if you want it to be or it can also be casual, fun or even whimsical.
The neutral color palette of black and white allow you to blend it with any color scheme too!

On one hand I can see this blending beautifully with that Halloween Party you've got coming up.
On the other hand....it's beautiful enough for a wedding.

See what I mean about the versatility?

I can't wait to share the SIMPLE re-styled popcorn cart - along with all of the other fun SIMPLE ideas we've got planned for the big day! (trying to keep things SIMPLE)! *wink*
Follow me on Instagram for daily updates and behind-the-scenes peeks as to what I'm doing!
I'll try not to include any photos of me pulling my hair out! Ha!!

This NEW Chalkboard Edition has NOT been loaded in the shop yet as an INSTANT DOWNLOAD so if you are interested in purchasing this new updated version now, just shoot me an email:  pnpflowersinc AT gmail DOT com

Here's to a GREAT busy day ahead.

KEEPiNG iT REAL
I've been up since 2:00 a.m. today.
Too much on my mind.
Too many things to get done.
NOT good.
These are all indications I need to simplify!!

So I finally got up at 3:00a.m. and went to work on the computer.
Now I'm headed to the printer and then to take "Ella Pie" to Pre-School!

I cannot believe it is the first day of October!
FREAKING out!!
Ella's birthday is next month...
and although I've been planning for months...
I haven't done much "doing"!
I'd better get to work!

Besides that...the holidays are fast approaching and I am NO WHERE ready for that yet!
Anyone else with me?
And I wonder why I can't sleep!

STYLING | Rustic Popcorn Bar

Wednesday, October 5

Well it's about time I posted the full details from the Rustic Popcorn Bar I created for the September issue of
The Party Dress Magazine...

The inspiration behind its creation was my Family Reunion this summer.
I wanted to do something special for our "movie night"...
We'd be watching a slideshow of family photos I was asked to put together...
So....
a POPCORN BAR was the perfect answer!
I mean really...
What goes better with watching a movie, afterall?
(and it WAS a movie - the slideshow ended up being one hour and twenty minutes long) *gasp*

Repurposing this cart as the focal point along with some borrowed rustic wooden barrels...
I designed the popcorn bar to be interactive so that everyone, (even the kids), could customize their own bags of popcorn.
The food prep was SUPER simple since I bought bags of fresh pre-popped popcorn I ordered from my local grocery store.
I picked up some salt shakers from a local restaurant supply store...
dressed them up with some labels...
and filled them with a variety of popcorn seasonings I ordered from Kernel Seasons.
Additional candies and peanuts were offered for those wanting a sweet and salty mix...
and there were also Popcorn Balls from Kernel Encore available for the kids.
The kids LOVED those almost as much as I loved displaying them on The Pastry Pedestal™ *wink*

I also ordered five unusual popcorn flavors from Kernel Encore, (no easy task from their 200+ flavor selection),
and created a simple game called "Mystery Popcorn Flavors".
(the person to guess all five of the flavors was the winner).

Okay - that's enough explaining...
I'll let the photos do the rest of the talking...

I hope you feel inspired to create your own popcorn bar...
It's seriously one of the easiest "dessert" buffets I've ever put together.

And just to make things easier...
All of the printables you see here are now available for purchase in my shoppe!
Everything comes in a "Printable Bundle"
• 24x36 Olde Fashioned Popcorn Poster
• 8 Popcorn Seasoning Salt Shaker Labels
• 4 Candy Topping Labels (including label for Popcorn Balls)
• Mystery Popcorn Game Label and Coordinating Numbers (1-5)
• Coordinating 8.5 x 11 "Instructions" sign for guests

KEEPiNG iT REAL
First of all...
The Popcorn Bar looked nothing like this for my family reunion.
The cart was damaged in transit so my plans/vision were drastically changed...
everything was set up on the kitchen counter instead. *frown*
(Not quite the effect I was going for - but thankfully my family appreciated everything anyway). *wink*
Once the cart was put back together (only good enough for the photo shoot, mind you)
I had to recreate everything for the magazine feature.

On a different note...
I enjoyed some WONDERFUL and much needed alone time over the past three days.
Aside from spending an evening with my mom watching movies and eating stir fry...
most of my precious, quiet hours were spent working...
on projects...
on design work...
on filling orders...
on painting my studio...
and on a gorgeous photo shoot I can't wait to share with you!!
